The American Roulette Wheel
Much like many other things in America, the American roulette wheel is bigger than the European roulette wheel. In this case, it means that there is an extra space on the wheel which is numbered 00. This means that the house advantage is greater than in European roulette, where there is only a single zero slot, as there are two spaces which don't belong to any of the even money wagers. There are casinos where a single zero hole can be found. As a rule these are the high end tables where gambling limits are somewhat higher. The benefit to the player is undisputed.
The Wager Variety in American Roulette
There is a wide variety of wagering options. In American Roulette, as with the European version of roulette, it is possible to wager Red, Black, High, Low, Odd, Even (these are the even money bets). In addition there are 12 number combinations (1-12, 13-24, 25-36), 6 number combinations, a 5 number combination (0, 00, 1-3), 3 number combinations and 2 number combinations as well as single number bets. Wagers are placed on a special roulette table which functions in a similar manner to the classic table designed by the French. The wide variety of wagering options with concomitant odds offered allows for all sorts of combinations and lets players choose how risky and profitable a game they wish to play. It is worth noting that from a statistical standpoint; most of the wagers enjoy similar house odds. The exception is the 5 number combination (of 0, 00, 1-3) which is somewhat less favorable.
American Roulette in Atlantic City
The standard casino rules in Atlantic City include a roulette betting rule which helps swing the game more in favor of the player. In Atlantic City, a rule similar to "la partage" is enacted. This means that half the money is returned on even money wagers which are lost to the 0 or the 00. This serves to improve the odds in favor of the American roulette player dramatically (at least, with the even money wagers).
